Inside the “Black Box” of China’s Corporate ESG Practice: Evidence from Longitudinal Surveys

This study presents ESG-related management practices in corporate China based on longitudinal surveys from 2020 to 2022. We find that the motives to engage in ESG-related activities by Chinese firms stems from various stakeholders. The policies implemented by the government proclaiming Carbon Neutrality goals by 2060 had a significant overall impact on shifting firms’ strategic priorities towards sustainable management practices. In addition, the pressures from customer demands comprised a strong driver in explaining firms’ engagement in sustainable management practices. Considering China’s dominance in the manufacturing industry as the “world’s largest supplier”, our results have important implications by documenting that many multinational corporations in developed economies as “major customers” can have a significant impact in driving global ESG-related objectives.
