Accounting Society

SMU Accounting Society, commonly known as ASoc, is a constituent body of the SMU Students’ Association (SMUSA) and represents all Bachelor of Accountancy (BAcc) students. It is the brainchild of the second cohort of BAcc students. The interim committee was formed in December 2003 and the first executive committee was installed in August 2004. Currently, ASoc is run by the 20th Management Committee with ISCA as their official partner.

ASoc strives to establish an integrative culture for BAcc students and promote an environment for holistic development. It organises exciting events such as ASoc Camp for the incoming BAcc freshmen, which provides them with a platform to integrate into SMU’s culture. One of their biggest night events, ASoc Night, serves to foster stronger bonds amongst BAcc students. ASoc Night celebrates SoA’s birthday with a fun-filled night of food and drinks, along with exciting performances from the ASoc pageantees.

Another aspect of ASoc’s mission is to ensure the holistic development of BAcc students. With events such as ASoc Axplore and Alumnight, these give students opportunities to link up with professional bodies, private sector companies and BAcc alumni working in various sectors. In addition, ASoc occasionally organises corporate visits to allow BAcc students to understand the companies’ cultures and opportunities that they offer. To guide students throughout their course of study, ASoc publishes yearly guidebooks such as the Freshmen Guidebook and Module Difficulty Guidebook.

ASoc is also highly involved in community service programmes such as the yearly Project Moolah. Project Moolah aims to inculcate the importance of financial literacy to secondary school students. Another project that ASoc prides itself in is the SMU-MCCY Charity Transparency Assessment. In this project, BAcc students serve as student assessors for hundreds of charities, promoting the importance of good corporate governance practices and fair disclosures.
