SMU Emerges Sole Winner Among More Than 100 Teams at Prestigious Gobi Desert Challenge
Published onThe Singapore Management University (SMU) – Zhejiang University Doctor of Business Administration (SMU-ZJU DBA) (Accounting and Finance) team has become SMU’s first team to complete the renowned Gobi Desert Challenge, (or "Gobi to West") with SMU emerging as the sole recipient of the event’s Model Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Team Award.
World Number 1 at BYU Accounting Research Rankings
Published onSingapore Management University’s School of Accountancy (SOA) has once again clinched World Number 1 for Archival Research (Financial Accounting) at the latest Brigham Young University (BYU) Accounting Research Rankings 2025 (released in February 2026).
SMU Accountancy graduate Shereen Williams MBE OStJ DL,was appointed High Sheriff of Gwent in April 2026. Shereen is the first Singaporean and first Malay Muslim to serve in this role.
SMU Bachelor of Accountancy graduate Andrew Lee joined the SMU Overseas PhD Scholar (OPS) Programme after graduating in 2025. He is currently pursuing his PhD in Accountancy at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and shares his experience.
SMU Bachelor of Accountancy student James Chia may only be in his final year, but has set his sights on his career goal - research and the academia. Even before graduation, James has successfully secured a pre-doctoral fellowship at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University.

Hosted this year by Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the annual Tri-University conference brings together faculty members from SMU, NTU and the National University of Singapore (NUS) and serves as a platform for the exchange of research ideas and constructive feedback between junior and senior scholars.
SMU Accountancy graduate Kunal Doshi discovered his interest in crypto during his second year in the School of Accountancy. Today, he finds his background in accounting highly relevant to his current role in a crypto firm, and the soft skills gained in SMU serving him well for his frequent public speaking engagements.
As new AI technologies emerge, SMU School of Accountancy is committed to equipping our Accountancy students with the tools to navigate both the possibilities and risks these technologies introduce. In January 2026, we launched the new course "AI Literacy for Accounting Professionals", which was developed in consultation with AI Singapore and Amazon Web Services (AWS) Academy.
Our students at the School of Accountancy are encouraged to pursue their interests beyond the academic and many demonstrate excellence in these pursuits. We highlight a few of their achievements over the past year.
Lee Kong Chian Chair Professor of Accounting, Cheng Qiang, has been recognised on Stanford University’s list of “World’s Top 2%” scientists on the 'World's Top 2% Scientists Network'.
Singapore Management University (SMU) and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-Shenzhen) have signed a Memorandum of Agreement to launch a joint Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) programme — a landmark initiative that brings together two leading Asian institutions to redefine high-end management education.
