The Value of Man in an AI-Assisted Decision Model: Field Evidence from Small Business Lending
An increasing number of companies are adopting AI-assisted decision models. How humans can contribute in such a decision model is an important question for both companies and employees. This issue was examined by investigating the value of human loan officers in an AI-assisted loan decision model. The study finds that the incremental contribution of loan officers to loan profits beyond AI recommendations increases with the soft information collected and used by loan officers and decreases with agency issues, algorithm aversion, and mental fatigue of loan officers. This investigation contributes to academia and practice by shedding light on the conditions humans can create or destroy value in AI-assisted decision models.

Dr Dan LI, Assistant Professor of Accounting
Employment Effects of Different AI Adoption Strategies: Evidence from Corporate Disclosures
How does firms’ adoption of AI affect employment, and how do these effects vary across different AI adoption strategies? In this study, Dan Li and his co-authors use a large language model (LLM) to identify firms that adopt AI based on their 10-K disclosures. They examine firms’ employment outcomes following the broad diffusion of Generative AI after the release of ChatGPT in November 2022, with particular attention to how AI adoption affects workers at different levels of seniority and across different types of positions. They further distinguish between automation and augmentation strategies to examine whether the way firms implement AI shapes its employment consequences. The study provides evidence on the evolving relationship between AI adoption and corporate employment and offers insights into how firms’ AI strategies may shape the future of work.

Fireside Chat: Opportunities and Application Cases of Agentic AI and Human Collaboration

While AI can help improve productivity and creativity, it poses many challenges to business and society, including data security issues, fake information, data-driven discrimination, and ethical issues (e.g., AI lending).
