In March 2019, Team BCDW comprising SMU Accountancy students, Chang Wei, Darren Chong Yu You, Ng Wei Heng and Tan Wei Gin Benjamin represented Singapore at the Deloitte SEA Tax Challenge 2019. As Champions of the national round of the competition – the SMU Tax Case Challenge 2019, Team BCDW competed against national champion teams from around Southeast Asia in a regional competition held in Bangkok, Thailand.

The event kicked off with a networking session, where Mr James Walton (SEA C&M Partner at Deloitte) welcomed the participants and gave a talk on presentation skills where he highlighted key tips on giving more engaging presentations. Thereafter, Mr Maneerat Usahacharoenporn (Tax Manager, Deloitte Thailand) delivered a detailed tax training session for the teams, in preparation for the upcoming final round of competition.
At the finals, each team put their capabilities in solving real-life tax and business problems to the test in one final showdown in hopes of impressing the judges. The teams exhibited teamwork and knowledge as they presented on a range of tax topics – from transfer pricing, to country-by country reporting, value chain analysis, withholding tax implications and more.
After an intense final, Accountancy student and member of Team BCDW, Ng Wei Heng was awarded Best Presenter of the competition.
Wei Heng said, “I was honoured to participate in the Deloitte SEA Tax Challenge together with my team, and to receive the Best Speaker award despite fierce competition from other presenters in the region. I would like to thank Professor Sum Yee Loong, for his support while we were preparing for this competition, as well as Deloitte Singapore for giving us the opportunity to compete at a regional level.”
