About Accounting Analytics Capstone Course

The Accounting Analytics Capstone (SMU-X) focuses on an experiential learning opportunity that allows students to translate classroom knowledge and practical solutions for real organisations.  Through their student consultancy project, students learn to solve complex business problems with guidance from the faculty and project sponsor mentors, from problem definition to final client presentation in real world settings.

The project sponsors come from a variety of industries – exposing students to a variety of business operations as they learn to apply accounting data analytics in different industries. Some project sponsors are also based overseas and students who take on these projects (also known as SMU-X Overseas projects) will have the opportunity to undergo a unique hybrid experience of serving as consultant for an actual company while understanding the different cultural and economical nuances involved when working overseas.

Learning Outcomes

The Capstone course focuses on examining accounting processes and applying data-driven analytics and insights so as to identify and create greater efficiency in accounting tasks.

The Capstone projects that are assigned to students are broadly categorised into Business Intelligence Analytics, Enterprise Process Management, Finance Strategy and Transformation and Lean Finance and Finance Share Services. At the end of the project, student teams conduct a final presentation to their project sponsors, and present their solutions which include deliverables such as dashboarding, predictive and forecasting models and balance scorecards and reports.  (Click here to read about how a project team comprising students from School of Accountancy and School of Computing and Information Systems worked with Singapore Exchange (SGX) to devise a solution for their current revenue forecast process.)
