Established in 1938, Hock Tong Bee (Private) Limited is currently under the leadership of Mr Clinton Ang, the 3rd Ang generation. Today, Hock Tong Bee (Private) Limited is a dynamic business with corporate strategies and developments in place, making it one of the oldest and largest independent wine and spirit companies in Singapore and an increasingly significant regional player. Already in 22 countries including Thailand, China and Maldives, CornerStone Wines is looking towards expanding into the rest of the East Asia, Middle East and Australia & Oceania.

Problem

There are two main problems that our group aim to tackle.

Problem 1:

Admin staffs need ensure that there are no errors pertaining to the Sales Order (SO) and the main job scope of the admin staffs are to ensure the pricing for different categories of products are correctly keyed and verified. It is also important for us to note that the pricing of different product categories would change in accordance with the type of customer. Thus, due to the complexity of the different pricings, this process is time-consuming.

Problem 2:

An important step in the purchasing process would be selecting a proper forwarder, which involves the consideration of many factors like freight days, port of calls, service vs price. Currently, the selection is done manually, by judgement and experience of the shipping officer. Hence, the accuracy and efficiency of the selection could be improved further.

Solution

Our team took quite some time to truly understand CornerStone’s needs and the problems of the project. As such, we organized a total of two zoom calls and one site visit before we firmed up the main problems that we aimed to tackle.

Before arriving to our solution, secondary research of the best practices in the industry were analysed extensively to understand how processes could be streamlined and integrated. Our solution ultimately was able to tackle the problems: reduce the administrative labour using Python and effectively and selecting the best freight forwarders service using goal programming.

Through this project, we have learnt valuable communication skills and we all felt that this is a key success factor for the project. The site visit to the CornerStone’s office allowed us to understand the ground and we were able to know the Cornerstone’s team better. Other than that, we provide constant update through email, keeping CornerStone’s Team in touch with the latest progress of the project. Moving forward, we believe that learning to communicate effectively in the pandemic would be helpful in our future jobs.
